A big congratulations to this years winners of the innovation award.
This year, in New Orleans, the first place ATSSA Innovation Award honors went to our vendor TraffiCalm (Post Falls, Idaho) for SignAlert™, a product designed to bring driver attention to roadway signs when reflectivity is just not enough. Using radar technology, SignAlert™ starts in motion high intensity LED flashing bars to draw the attention of the motorist to the signage. This solar-powered sign enhancement is designed to retrofit quickly onto existing signage and infrastructure. As an option, the product also serves as a traffic data collection device.
Nite Beam Products’ (Kalamazoo, Mich.) Hi Vision L.E.D. Safety Vest won the second place ATSSA Innovation Award. The LEDs on the vest are visible up to a quarter of a mile away (front and back), allowing motorists to see a road worker before the vehicle’s headlights actually reveal the worker through standard retroreflectivity. The vest can be worn in any weather condition and was tested in Alaskan weather. Powered by a lightweight, USB rechargeable battery pack or three AA batteries, the USB charging time is one hour for a constant mode running time of 18 hours (40 hours in the flashing mode).
Third place ATSSA Innovation Award honors went to PSS – formally Plastic Safety Systems (Cleveland, Ohio) – for its RoadQuake 2F CRIB, a fully-integrated cargo carrier designed specifically for the transport, deployment, retrieval, storage and safekeeping of RoadQuake 2F Temporary Portable Rumble Strips (TPRS). Because CRIB mounts to the exterior of a vehicle, it eliminates the need to find extra space in crowded vehicles. CRIB, which holds a maximum of six RoadQuake 2F TPRS, makes deployment and removal of the strips a one-person job, which reduces worker stress and removal time.
